School of Housing, Building and Planning

The School of HBP, established in 1972, is one of the few building construction-based educational centres in Malaysia that is multi-disciplinary in nature.  The School was modelled after the concept introduced by Professor Koenigsberger and Markus that aimed to produce multi-disciplinary graduates to meet the needs of a developing country.  However, over the years, the School has slowly evolved to cater for the industry needs to have traditional trade professionals such as architects, planners, quantity surveyors and project managers.

Currently, the School has over 50 full-time academic staff, including 3 professors and 14 associate professors.  At present the School offers six disciplines at the undergraduate level.  These are Town Planning, Architecture, Building Technology, Construction Management, Interior Design and Quantity Surveying.  The School also offers postgraduate programme in Building Technology, Landscape Architecture, Project Management and Housing.  Both taught and research post-graduate programmes help to strengthen the School’s forte in research and also professional consultancies.

HBP is located in the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Penang campus half-way between the Penang International Airport to the south of Penang Island and the City of George Town to the north.
